Artist's wall text for this exhibition reads: I made this painting as
an expression of the quiet beauty and warmth of a simple breakfast. I thought
that the soft gray winter light coming through the window contrasted beautifully
with the vivid color of the citrus fruits, and the yolk of the fried egg. I also
thought of this scene as a tribute to some simple foods that I take for granted,
but are actually quite a luxury. As I was painting this still life I had plenty
of time to enjoy the inherent beauty of each food. But I also thought of all
that it takes to produce a bagel, an egg, a cup of tea, to grow fruit and
deliver it to a different climate before it spoils, and then ultimately, all
that it takes to have it on the table each day.
